Left from Roan High Knob Shelter. Kind of a wet start but not too bad. One of the first out, was ready to get back down to lower elevation. The south founder had told me the breakfast buffet at Mountain Harbor was killer, so Zombie and I decided to press on.
Hiked this section a long time ago with some friends from UAB. Carvers gap to Overmountain if I remember correctly, back in the day when I carried a Damn shotgun and axe with me on hiking trips.
Side story: we actually camped out in one of the girls cars in the parking lot at Carvers Gap. After weather cleared in the morning we pushed on to Overmountain.
The balds were insanely windy today from the front pushing in. I was damn near diagonal at some point hiking to the barn (trail lingo for Overmountain).
Stopped by the barn for lunch, there were probably about 11 spring breakers there, just having a good old time.
Pressed on from there to Hump Mountain for some photogenic awesomeness.
We rolled up to the base of a fairly large bald, as picture below:
Thinking we were close! We got to the top and snapped a few cool photos before going into town!!
…until we walked down into a thicket and popped out to this
We stopped here and chilled for a while. Zombie pointed out Plisken who was walking down the ridge in the top right corner of the pic. From our perspective, he looked like the tiniest ant you’ve ever seen walking down a hill.
After that windy hellish climb, we made it to the top, and pressed on further to ultimately follow the ridge to the NC/TN border.
We were welcomed into TN with a nice 2 mile boulder crawl, which felt great after all those climbs. Finally reached Mountain Harbor only to find out they only had one bed left. We decided that Zombie would sleep in and I could test out my hammock for the first time since I just got it. I was a little ticked at first for having to pay to camp, but after thinking through what came with the camping spot (shower, back to the future, kitchen, free fire wood) I wasn’t so pissed. Plus the breakfast had to be great if it was $12 right??
